I used to do #5, but now I find that GTD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getting_Things_Done) works much better, i.e. archiving all “read” mails and keeping my inbox empty except for mails that I need to act on.

I think one last important tip is to “know when NOT to use e-mail.” For example, when it comes to brainstorming, or discussing big-picture ideas, you’re better off NOT using email. You’re better off meeting with a whiteboard, and if that’s not feasible, use an online collaboration tool like http://AskMyBrainTrust.com.

Every of the seven points are valid and awesome except for 5. Use “Unread” Status. I would rather set it flagged. Reasoning: You’ve read it but you want to attend to it later, so attach a flag for now. Making it unread will then clubbed them amongst those which you’re actually unread!

You say “If you have bad grammar, use the spell checker.” This doesn’t make any sense. A spell checker will help me with my spelling, not with my grammar. (And grammar checkers are sufficiently bad that they probably won’t help me with my grammar, either.) Spelling is not grammar.
